YAMAHA XS650Thi s was to be Yamaha’s first four stroke twin. Introduced in 1970, the XS1 was to give rise to a fourteen year legacy of essentially the same bike, soon to be renamed the XS650. It was built to last but unfortunately not to handle. After a few years and the help of British Guru Percy Tait, the frame matched the engine and a legend was born.

 71 rigged 650. I put this together in my friends upstairs bedroom. Hand battery box built and box for regulator and a air box for the K&Ns used bike trick pegs for the foot pegs had the brake and clutch levers extended for heel shifting. [like forward controls] Got old bicycle rack had modified for my front fender for my bedroll. Got old rear rack off a HD and made brackets to fit the rear fender supports used the original brake light backing plate made brackets for a chain guard and canteen to hold extra oil and a box in front of the foot pages to hold spare plugs and some wrenches and things.

 Here's my latest creation at the mock up stage with my teenage son trying it for size. Started out as an ' 81 Special (see below). I think I will call her Black Betty or Back in Black.

 This is my first build so I want to give a little history about what I have done so far. This might be kind of lengthy but I hope you enjoy it.
Here she is in the beginning a 1981 Special Craigslist find of $250.

 Dave,this is MY650. I've owned 4 of these over the years,all of them Specials. Since I bought this one, I've lowered it with Rebel shocks,added a early xlch tail lamp, and 2 Uni air filters. Future plans call for different handlebars and exhaust. Maybe black tins. We'll find out come this spring! Till then I'll just keep riding it,I've owned it for 6 weeks now and have already put over 1500 miles on her! Thanks, Dino
